How to unblock Facebook in more detail:
Facebook is, well, Facebook! It's arguably the most visited website that people check first, last and consistently every day.
So when I first encountered being blocked from Facebook, I was frustrated to say the least! I had decided to visit a friend's office to work from there for the day and promptly went straight to check my Facebook upon setting up my laptop in the office.
However as soon as I did, I was denied access! What was going on? Why was I unable to access Facebook on my personal laptop all of a sudden? Well, being the type of person that loves to find a solution as soon as possible; I set to figure out why this was happening and whether I could bypass this block.
After a bit of searching and trying different methods, I found a solution for how to unblock Facebook once and for all -- so I wanted to share this with anyone else looking to unblock Facebook, too. Here it is!
Why is Facebook Blocked?
So the first thing to determine are the many reasons why Facebook might be blocked for you right now. There are actually a few different common reasons for this to be happening, so I will quickly state these now:
- You are on your school's internet and/or computer.
- You are on public WiFi (e.g. local cafe, airport, bar, etc.)
- You are in a part of the world that does not allow Facebook access (e.g. China.)
Number 1. is definitely the most common, and was the reason that Facebook was blocked for me as I discovered that my friend's office had placed a block on Facebook access on their intranet, so once I joined that network I was under the same restriction.
Number 2. is the second most common reason that Facebook is blocked, since many public WiFi connections choose to block Facebook as a way to keep their internet bill down and also ensure people do not abuse their WiFi connection -- especially if it is offered for free.
Number 3. is technically the least common reason behind a Facebook block since this is only experienced by people physically located within a physical location that has restricted Facebook access. China is currently the only openly known country that has blocked Facebook access within the nation. However, over the years there have been many countries that have temporarily blocked the goliath social network website, mainly for political reasons.
How is Facebook Blocking Access?
Now that the main reasons why Facebook may be blocked for you right now have been covered, it's important to understand actually how these most common restrictions are implemented, technically speaking, as this will make very clear exactly why the solution I describe below works so effectively on all types of Facebook block.
Number 1. block is implemented on the actual intranet servers being used by the school/office at that level, so that all computers that join the network automatically adhere to this block; rather than each computer having the block individually implemented.
Number 2. block is placed commonly on the router of the establishment that is offering the public WiFi. This again means all devices that join said WiFi will automatically adhere to the Facebook block placed on at the router level.
Number 3. block is essentially a form of "reverse geo-blocking". You see, 'geo-blocking' itself is when you cannot get access to a website or online service because that website has chosen to only allow users from certain geographic areas to access the site. So Facebook choosing to restrict access because you are located in a certain area in the world would be geo-blocking. However, countries like China are basically reversing this process by blocking access to Facebook because of being located within a geographic location (in this case, China.)
Now although all of these methods of blocking differ in many ways, they all have one very important thing in common: all of these blocks are effective because of the IP address you are given when you connect to any/all of them.
You see, your IP address is a unique representation of your current location and connection at any time/place. Thus, if you can change your IP address somehow, then it does not matter which of the above 3 blocks you are under -- you can unblock Facebook.
Thankfully, nowadays there are a few different methods to change your IP address. The most effective for all three above block-circumstances is to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
How to Use a VPN to Unblock Facebook
Step 1: Sign up for VPN
You have a large choice of VPN service providers to choose from for this solution -- over 100 in fact -- so to save you checking out and deciding which are the best; I personally reviewed the top rated providers and decided that ExpressVPN is best for this solution. Thus, I will use it as the example while walking you through the very quick setup steps below.
Your first step is to head to ExpressVPN and sign up for an account. You'll see that regardless of which plan you choose; you are given a money back guarantee period, which is awesome:
Once you have setup your account, you will now be prompted to download and install the ExpressVPN software onto the computer/device you are using right now. This takes just a few moments and requires zero technical "expertise".
Step 2: Download & Install VPN
So click through the link in your account confirmation email that will take you to the download area on the IPVanish website, then choose the appropriate download link for your device.
For example, I use my Macbook and Android device most for online activity, so I downloaded the OS X software and then went to the Google Play Store on my Android device and downloaded the dedicated ExpressVPN Android app on there.
You will see that essentially every device you would ever use to access Facebook on is supported by ExpressVPN, which is great:
Once you have downloaded the software, the installation process should begin automatically. When it does, simply click through the few steps and the software will install in a matter of seconds.
Step 3: Connect to Desired Server on VPN
Now that you have the software ready to go, it should ask to open up right away. Go ahead and do this, or double click it open manually, then you will be ready to choose a server location to join the VPN on.
This is the all-important step in this solution, because the server location you choose will change your IP address from your current one (that has the Facebook block on it) to whichever server you join. This will also make your location "appear" within whichever server location you join.
For example, here is me connecting to a New York based server location on my Macbook:
So go ahead and select a server. You don't really need to choose a specific location if you are under blocks 1 or 2 as mentioned above, but if you are being blocked from Facebook because of your current location, like China, then you will of course want to make sure and choose a server location outside of China.
Here's another example of me connecting to a UK based server on my ExpressVPN Android app:
Step 4: Setup Facebook Account
Once you have connected to your VPN, you will have successfully changed your IP address and will now be able to go to Facebook.com and you will have full, secure and privacy-protected access to the site for as long as you want.
So if you already have a Facebook account then go ahead and sign in. If you are using Facebook for the first time, you will need to quickly setup a new account. This just takes a few seconds and is of course free.
There you have it! My super quick and simple solution for how to unblock Facebook completely regardless of how you are being blocked from the social network.
