It’s confession time. I have never been up to speed on social media. I love social media, but I am always behind the curve. I started off on Friends Reunited, which I loved and reconnected with lots of old mates, but then spent ages on the site wondering why no one responded to me anymore!
Then I had a MySpace account, and the same thing happened. I couldn’t figure out why my favorite band didn’t put anything up when they had a new album and world tour going on. They were over on Facebook, so eventually I made it over there, just in time to see many of my mates hopping off to Twitter.
By this point, my son was old enough to be on social media, so I decided to follow his lead. And this led me to Snapchat, the time limited, video messaging site. I was hooked, and more importantly I got my mates into this one, rather than the other way round.
One thing I use Snapchat for is to talk to my kids, so I was a bit annoyed when my son told me it was blocked at his school. So I figured out how he could still get my messages on Snapchat while in school. As it turns out, using a VPN, the process is pretty simple.
So I decided to write this short guide, using ExpressVPN to illustrate the simple and effective way to deal with the problem of how to unblock Snapchat at school.
Why is Snapchat not Available in Schools?
If you are lucky, you won’t have a problem using social networks like Snapchat in your school. But unfortunately many schools all around the world still have their heads buried in the sand when it comes to social media. The ability to use networks like Snapchat for educational and research purposes is overlooked and they are instead seen as a time-wasting tool.
For other schools, outdated information technology can mean that their networks would simply not be able to cope if every pupil were using such networks at the same time.
So many schools choose to restrict access to the sites, meaning that users will simply get an error message when they try to use the service.
How are Schools Blocking Access to Snapchat?
Almost every school will run an internal network with all onsite internet activity, whether on hardwired machines or Wi-Fi connections, will pass through the schools own server. The school controls this server and is therefore able to block access to any services they choose for all devices whose internet connection passes through this server. This is necessary to prevent access to unsuitable material such as pornography.
TO get around the block, users therefore need to be making their connection through a different server, and this is where a VPN comes in. By connecting to a VPN, users are connected to an external server, located anywhere in the world, via an encrypted pathway. As long as the external server does not restrict access to Snapchat as well, the service should be accessible as usual.
It really is that simple. Read on, and I will explain exactly how it’s done.
How to Use a VPN to access Snapchat at School
Step 1: Sign up for VPN
So first of all, you need to sign up for a VPN. I recommend ExpressVPN for this purpose, and you can visit their site by clicking through any of the links on this page.
Nice there, you can select any of their subscription packages. They aren’t too expensive, and there is a free, guaranteed money-back period if you are not completely satisfied.
Choose your package, and then make your way through the payment process. Once you have finished paying, you will be sent an email to authenticate your account. Click on the link sent and bingo, you have signed up.
Step 2: Download & Install VPN
Next you need to download and install the software. Choose the correct operating system from the list you can see below. You can use ExpressVPN on any device.
After clicking, all you have to do is follow the simple step-by-step instructions to download and install the software. It should only take a few moments.
Step 3: Connect to an External erver on VPN
Lastly all you need to do is hook up to a server. There are dozens to choose from on ExpressVPN but to access Snapchat at school, any will do as long as it is not based in a country where Snapchat is restricted (I don’t know of any of these at present).
And with that you should be able to visit the Snapchat site and log into your account as usual. If you don’t have an account, they are free and easy to sign up to. And believe me, Snapchat is hours of fun, and can also be used to be as productive (or unproductive) as you like.
Do leave me any comments or questions in the box below. Feedback on these guides is always nice to receive.
And if you are really not convinced by ExpressVPN, there are plenty of other VPNs out there you can choose from. Take a look above to see my pick of the top 5.
