How to unblock YouTube on iPad in more detail:

NOTE: To unblock YouTube on iPads, I use a VPN. There are a lot of these available, so I checked out a whole bunch and decided to go with ExpressVPN, just because they offer the best value VPN for what my budget is. Check them out here:

Let’s face it -- YouTube is winning the internet. Sure there are amazing on demand commercial media streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu that offer awesome content, but when it comes to completely free, instant-streaming, never-ending content: YouTube is king.

So it’s no surprise that I always find myself many times in a day browsing YouTube on my laptop, iPhone and iPad for waaaaaay too long at a time. It’s just so entertaining! However, you get used to having every single video you click on in YouTube to be instantly available and streaming, that when a video is blocked -- your world ends. Literally.

OK, not literally, but, you know, literally. I was watching YouTube videos on my iPad the other day, and for whatever reason happened to click on at least 5 videos that gave me the error message of:

This is super annoying, and it happened enough times that I decided to solve this problem and figure out how to unblock YouTube on iPad devices once and for all.

It took me a little time, but I found a perfect, quick, and secure solution. So once I had it setup on my iPad; I figured more people (like you!) would be looking for a way to unblock YouTube on your iPad, too.

Here’s my quick walkthrough on how to do this. Enjoy!

Why is YouTube Content Not Available on iPad?

Enter your to understand how to unblock YouTube on iPad devices, I first had to figure out why some YouTube videos are blocked. As it turns out, this can be for a couple of reasons, like the uploader choosing to privatise the video.

However, by far and away the most common blocking reason is with the uploader choosing to geographically restrict their video; only allowing users to view it if they are located in specific parts of the world.

This process is actually quite common across the entire web, and is known as “geo-blocking”. So let’s determine how this process works.

How is YouTube Blocking Content on iPad?

In order to best understand why the solution I describe below works, it is good to quickly learn how this process of “geo-blocking” works. Geo-blocking essentially functions as a guard on a YouTube video.

This guard needs to check where each and every user is located at the moment they try to watch the video, and then block or allow access to the video based on what locations the uploader allowed/denied. So how does this guard check each and every user’s location?

Simple: by looking at their IP addresses. You see, everyone (including you!) has a unique IP address based on their location. Your home internet has a unique IP address; your local cafe has a unique IP address; your office has a unique IP address, etc.

Therefore, it makes sense that if you could somehow figure out how to change your IP address from your real one, to instead make your location look like you are located in a part of the world that the video you’re trying to watch is available in -- then you can unblock YouTube videos as much as you want.

Luckily, there are a few methods to changing your IP address, and one in particular is by far the most secure, quick and failsafe way to do this -- by using a VPN (Virtual Private Network). Using a VPN to change your IP address is by far the safest, most secure and privacy-protecting method.

So after a bunch of research on the many, many VPN providers around today, I settled on using ExpressVPN -- purely because their VPN best suits my needs and budget.

How to Use a VPN to Unblock YouTube on iPad

Step 1: Sign up for VPN

Since I use ExpressVPN for this, I will use them as the example while I walk you through this quick step-by-step setup process.

Go ahead and sign up for the VPN by choosing the plan that suits your best. ExpressVPN offer a 30-day money back guarantee, which is well worth doing to see if you like it or not.

After signing up, you’ll confirm your account via email. Here’s how simple the sign up process is with ExpressVPN:

After completing the signup process, you will then want to download the VPN software onto your iPad.

Step 2: Download & Install VPN

To download the VPN software onto your iPad, just head to the App Store on your iPad and search for the VPN provider (in this case, ExpressVPN), then select the app and hit “download”.

Once downloaded, the app will also install automatically, so this step is as easy as it can get! With the app downloaded and installed onto your iPad, all that’s left to do is open it up.

If you want to install the VPN onto any other device you watch YouTube on, like your laptop, smartphone, etc -- then that's no problem since ExpressVPN (like 99% of all VPN providers) is compatible with almost every device you would ever use to watch YouTube on:

Step 3: Connect to Desired Server Location on VPN

This is the all important step that will change your IP address to make your location appear in whichever “server location” you choose to connect to the VPN through.

So simply open up the VPN app, select the server location that will unblock the YouTube video you want to watch, then click “Connect”. Simple as that.

To show how clean and simple to use VPNs are, here’s how ExpressVPN’s interface looks across different devices:

Step 4: Watch Unblocked YouTube on iPad

Once you've connected to the VPN app on your iPad -- go ahead and open up that YouTube video that was just moments a go blocked from accessing. You will now be able to watch it!

Any other video you come across that is geo-blocked, just open up your VPN app on your iPad and connect to a server location that will change your IP address and thus tell YouTube that you are "located" in the area that the video is not blocked in.

You can change your server location connection as much as you like on your VPN, which is great. Most VPNs have server locations all over the world that give great secure and fast connections.

So there you go -- a quick walkthrough on how to unblock YouTube on iPad devices (and any other device you watch YouTube on!) in just under 5 minutes.

As I mentioned earlier in this guide, there are many VPN service providers around that offer great value. So I personally reviewed some of the best and narrowed down the top five providers. If you want to check them out then here they are:

All the above VPN providers offer a money back guarantee period when you first use them, so feel free to do what I did and check out a few at once to see which one is best for you.
