How to unblock YouTube on iPhone in more detail:
Arguably the most annoying feeling in the world is when you go to YouTube and try to watch a video, only to be denied access! OK, maybe I'm slightly exaggerating. But it is super frustrating.
If you are anything like me, you jump onto YouTube on your iPhone no less than 20 times a day to check out videos randomly or from links your friends send you throughout the day. So when you see a video in the 'related videos' section down the side of what you're watching, only to be shown this blocked message when you click on it, is never fun:
So after being shown this message one too many times, I decided to take it upon myself to figure out a solution that would unblock any blocked YouTube video on my iPhone in seconds.
After some research I determined the best solution that proved to be the quickest, most secure and effective. I guessed there would be more people out there looking to solve the same problem, so I decided to put together this very quick little guide on how to unblock YouTube on your iPhone. Enjoy!
Why is YouTube Content Not Available on iPhone?
The first thing to figure out is why the YouTube video is being blocked on your iPhone. There are a few reasons that this might be happening, but the most common is Geo-blocked video -- The uploader of the video you are trying access chooses to only make it viewable by users in certain locations.
Why geo-blocking is used by uploaders can be for a few reasons. Sometimes the uploader is a normal individual and just decides to restrict access from some countries for personal reasons we will never know! Sometimes it is a corporation, like an official record label or business YouTube channel, that restricts access from all countries outside their focused market/demographic.
Whatever the reasons for the geo-blocking, the next thing to figure out is exactly how YouTube knows which users to block from accessing geo-blocked videos.
How is YouTube Blocking Access on iPhone?
So how are the geo-blocks being technically implemented? The way that YouTube determines every user's location when you attempt to access a geo-blocked video, is by checking your IP address.
Your IP address tells YouTube exactly where in the world you are at the moment you are trying to access that blocked video. So if there is a way to somehow change your IP address to make it "appear" like you are located in the country that the video is available in, then you can theoretically access any YouTube video that's geo-blocked.
Once I figured this out, I quickly researched the most effective and secure method to change my IP address to whichever country I need to "appear from", and discovered that the best method is to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network).
How to Use a VPN to Unblock YouTube on iPhone
Step 1: Sign up for VPN
There are literally hundreds of VPN service providers available just now, so I took it upon myself to research and review the very best rated ones around.
I ended up deciding to go with ExpressVPN, as this provider satisfied my unblocking needs within my modest budget -- so I'll be using it as the example VPN while I walk you through this super quick setup process to unblock YouTube on iPhone devices.
Step one is to go to the VPN website, pick the plan that best suits your needs and budget, choose payment method then confirm your account details via email. This all takes under a minute and is as straightforward as can be:
Once you have signed up, your next step is to go ahead and download then install the VPN software.
Step 2: Download & Install VPN
Downloading and installing the VPN software is even more straightforward that signing up. Once you confirm your account via email, you are automatically redirected to the download area of the website, which presents you with all download links to every device you would ever use to watch blocked YouTube videos on.
For example, here's a look at the list of ExpressVPN's compatible devices:
So go ahead and get the ExpressVPN app in the App Store then go through the couple of steps of installation, which requires zero technical expertise.
Step 3: Connect to Desired Server Location on VPN
When the VPN is installed, all you need to do is open it up and connect to the location that will unblock the YouTube video you are trying to watch.
This is the part that actually changes your IP address. Whichever location you choose will alter your IP address to make your location "appear" in that country. In addition to your iPhone, here's how simple the connection process is with ExpressVPN on a Macbook:
And since I watch just as many YouTube videos on my Android smartphone, I also installed the ExpressVPN app onto my mobile device, so here's a look at how simply the connection process is on it:
Step 4: Watch Unblocked YouTube on iPhone
Once you are connected to your VPN app on your iPhone, you will have access to the YouTube video you are trying to access that's been geo-blocked.
From now on, whenever you encounter a YouTube video on your iPhone that's geo-blocked, you simply go to your VPN app and change your location to one that will change your IP address and give you access. No more blocked YouTube videos!
