How to watch Amazon Prime outside US in more detail:
So you want to know how to watch Amazon Prime outside US? Then you've come to the right place. Let me show you exactly how to do it in less than 5 minutes.
How do I know this? Because I was in the exact same position you are in just a few months ago.
You see, when I first got Amazon Prime, I was super excited about all the shows I had instant access to. So many series that I had wanted to get started on watching! Needless to say I got heavily invested in a few TV series very quickly after getting an Amazon Prime account.
However, as I travel often it was not long until I was on a plane to Spain, Europe and the first night I settled into my AirBNB to catch up on the latest episodes of my beloved shows, I was presented with a supremely disappointing message on my Amazon Prime account, that looked like this:
Why?! I was way too upset over this, but only because I was not expecting to be denied my shows! OK, I know how pathetic that sounds, but you know what it's like in those first 5 seconds that you don't get what you want -- we all turn into entitled little babies!
So I quickly researched why this was happening, then figured out the absolute best solution to get around this block and allow me to watch my Amazon Prime account from outside the US. This quick guide will show you exactly how to do it, too.
Why is Amazon Prime Blocked for me?
The reason Amazon Prime is blocked from accessing outside the US is because you have signed up for your Amazon Prime account through Amazon.com, so you've essentially bought the American version of Amazon Prime (as opposed to .co.uk, etc.)
This means that you have signed up for access to the entire Amazon Prime library of TV shows and movies that the US Amazon Prime has the digital rights to legally offer you.
You see the US Amazon Prime offers specific media to users based on agreements made between Amazon and the owners of each and every movie or TV show therein. These are distribution rights and are very strict agreements that result in such restrictions on access being made to anyone trying to access the US Amazon Prime when they are located outside America.
How is Amazon Prime Blocking me?
When I was figuring out why Amazon Prime was not letting me access my own account from Spain, I quickly realised that it is most important to understand how the Amazon Prime service is determining my location when I try to access the service. So I will quickly explain this to you, which will help you understand how the solution I lay out below works.
The way Amazon Prime denies or allows access to users is by checking their physical location every single time a user tries to access the service. Your location is figured out by Amazon Prime checking your IP address, which is unique to the Internet connection you have from the location you are currently at.
Your IP address is instantly shown to Amazon Prime, which means they can instantly check it against an internal system of "allowed" (inside the US) and "disallowed" (outside the US) IP addresses, then deny or give access accordingly. This process is called "geo-blocking" and is a very common wall implemented by most online media streaming services nowadays.
So the solution to lifting this block and allowing you to watch Amazon Prime from outside the US, is to somehow change your IP address to make you "appear" inside the US.
After a lot of researching, I found out that by far the best method to do this is by using what's called a Virtual Private Network, or "VPN". A VPN is an incredibly sophisticated yet super simple piece of software you download to any device you want that allows you full control over your IP address, while also giving you a super high-level of privacy protection on all of your online activity.
There are literally hundreds of VPN service providers around today that vary in quality and price. So my next step of research for this solution was to review a whole bunch of the best VPNs for watching Amazon Prime outside US and deciding on the best one for my circumstance and budget.
I settled on ExpressVPN, so for the purpose of the steps below I will use this VPN as an example.
How to Use a VPN to Watch Amazon Prime Outside US
Step 1: Sign up for VPN
Firstly you want to quickly sign up for an account with ExpressVPN, which simply consists of going to their website, choosing the plan that suits you best, then confirming your account details. Should take you no more than a minute:
As you can see, you have plenty payment options that make this step swift and painless. ExpressVPN is right in the middle as far a pricing goes, compared to the other top VPNs on the market today. Not too cheap; not too expensive.
Step 2: Download & Install VPN
Next you want to download and install ExpressVPN onto your laptop or smartphone or whatever device you want to watch Amazon Prime from.
This process is essentially automatic, with the VPN provider redirecting you to the download link you need, as well as presenting all other download options for devices they support. Here are the devices ExpressVPN are compatible with:
Once you've downloaded the software, install it (standard installation process like any software you install on your device), then you will be ready to open it up.
Step 3: Connect to US-based Server on VPN
Open up the VPN software and you will be presented clearly with the different location options for you to choose to connect from. This is mainly what you are paying for -- the ability to connect to any private server offered by your VPN provider, of which they have many located all over the world:
Above is a quick look at what ExpressVPN looks like on my Macbook, and below is a snapshot of the connection process on my Android smartphone:
Of course you will want to select a server location that's within the US, since this will tell Amazon Prime that you are located within the US, giving you access the service.
Step 4: Watch Amazon Prime Outside US
Once connected to a US server through your VPN, you simply just navigate to the Amazon Prime service on your device and you will have full access to your US Amazon Prime account from outside the US.
The only instance that you would not be giving access after doing this entire process would be because you just need to restart your internet browser, but it will definitely work after that, if necessary.
There you go! If you have followed the steps above that I just laid out, then you will have full access of your US Amazon Prime account from any location outside the US instantly, securely and legally!
As I mentioned earlier in this guide, there are many VPN providers out there today that offer differing levels of service and price plans for all budget sizes. So to give you more options, I personally reviewed the best ones out there today and narrowed down the 5 absolute best VPNs for watching Amazon Prime outside the US:
