How to Watch Fox Sports in the UK
in more detail:
The Brits have never really got US sports. Football, Baseball, Basketball, even Ice Hockey. None of them have really caught on with our neighbors from across the pond. Of course that’s their choice. If they are happy to stick with soccer and ‘cricket’ (I’ve tried and I have just got no idea what’s going on!) then that’s up to them.
But there are plenty of Americans in Britain too, and it’s very unfair on them. I should know. I first went to London for work a few years back, naively assuming that I would be able to watch the Knicks and the Giants on some cable channel somewhere. Wrong! It was almost impossible to find MLB or NFL anywhere on British TV, and I had to resort to unreliable and unofficial feeds to get my fix.
So when I had to go back on another assignment, I wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice. This time I decided to do my research and make sure I could access Fox Sports, which has everything I need on there. It turns out, there is a really easy way to do this. All you need is a VPN.
Why is Fox Sports not Available in the UK?
So why couldn’t I watch Fox Sports Go, the Fox Sports online streaming service, while I was in the UK? The answer to that question is rights. Fox Sports buys a license to show the sports that it does in the USA. These licenses can cost a huge amount of money, and are the main source of revenue for a lot of the leagues.
But these leagues also sell separate licenses to overseas broadcasters, and as Fox Sports is a US channel, it only holds a license to show their sports in the USA. They are therefore obliged to stop overseas users from accessing their online services under the terms of their rights agreements.
To do this, they use something known as geo-blocking to restrict access to only those users located in the USA.
How is Fox Sports Blocking Access in the UK?
So how does geo-blocking work? Well it is a relatively simple technology which reads your IP Address when you visit the Fox Sports site.
An IP Address is a set of data which every internet user transmits whenever they visit a website or log into an online service. It contains a variety of different pieces of information, but the key one for geo-blocking software is your geographic location.
By looking at your IP Address, Fox Sports can see where in the world you are, and if you are located in the UK, or indeed anywhere else in the world, you will not be allowed to use their Fox Sports Go service.
The only way to get around this is by changing your IP Address to one which indicates that you are in the USA. And the best way to do this is by using a VPN.
Carry on reading, and I will explain exactly how to do this.
How to Use a VPN to Watch Fox Sports in UK
Step 1: Sign up for VPN
Using a VPN to watch Fox Sports in the UK is actually relatively easy. First you need to visit the website of your chosen VPN. I always use BufferedVPN which I find the best for online streaming, and you can find links to their site on this page.
Once there, you can choose from a variety of different subscription packages. Make your pick and you will be forwarded to a payments page, where you can make payment using a variety of internationally recognized payment options.
If you are unsure, BufferedVPN offer a 30-day money-back guarantee so if you are not completely satisfied, you will get every cent back.
Once you have completed payment, you will be invited to download and install the BufferedVPN software.
Step 2: Download & Install VPN
Downloading and Installing the software is also really easy to do. All you have to do is select the correct operating system and device from the menu you can see below.
You will then be walked through the process of downloading and starting the installation process. The whole thing shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes.
Step 3: Connect to US-based Server on VPN
Once you have finished installing the software, open it up and you will be confronted with BufferedVPN's excellent and very user friendly interface. The only thing left for you to do is choose which of their servers you want to connect to.
To watch Fox Sports in the UK, you will need to select one of the US-based options.
Step 4: Setup Fox Sports Account
As soon as you are connected to the server, that’s it. You are ready to go. All you have to do is visit the Fox Sports website and log on in the usual way.
If you don’t already have a Fox Sports account, it is also relatively easy to sign up for one. You will need a US Cable subscription to do this, but even if you don’t have a US friend who can help you with this, there are a number of web services that can help you get one (have a quick search on Google). Once that is set up, you can simply sign up for an account as usual.
And that’s all you need to get your fix of US sports on Fox Sports in the UK. My British colleagues were also very impressed at the amount of British and European soccer I could watch on there too. It was a great solution for me, and I know it is for countless other UK-based Americans as well.
Do let me know about your experiences and any comments you have using the box below.
And if you are not keen to use BufferedVPN for whatever reason, there are of course numerous other VPN providers you can use instead. See above my pick of the top 5 VPNs for watching Fox Sports in the UK. Enjoy sports fans.
