Let's face it, if you're reading this quick guide then you are as obsessed with Netflix as I am! Netflix is just such a great on-demand online streaming service, we just can't help but use it daily, right? Right.
So when you are at School -- whether that be high school or college -- and you have some spare time over lunch or a free period, these are great moments to catch up on your favourite Netflix series.
The only problem with this is that many school nowadays are blocking Netflix from being accessible by any student on any device, whether personal or the school's.
Now I understand why many schools choose to do this, as there will always be students that take advantage of having their smartphone or tablet at school and sneak some Netflix viewing during class or lecture time, which obviously negatively impacts their educational experience.
However, it is definitely unfair to those of us that are good students and don't slack off during class/lecture time, but are blocked from accessing Netflix in school during free time, just because a few bad students pushed your school to block the service altogether.
Thus, I took it upon myself to find a 100% effective solution on how to watch Netflix at school that would allow anyone to watch the service on any device, at any time, without risk of being caught. And I figured it out!
So here is my super quick and simple guide on how to watch Netflix at school. Enjoy.
Why is Netflix not Available at School?
I began my research for the solution by first understanding the many reasons why a school will have chosen to block access to Netflix, which I already touched on in the intro to this guide.
Essentially, schools want to take every measure to make sure their students are using every minute of school time to study and further advance their education. So with 99% of students having smartphones and laptops and tablets in their possession 100% of the time at school, it didn't take long for the vast majority of schools to place blocks on their school internet to online services and websites that students spend most of their time on, like Facebook, Instagram, and of course - Netflix.
There really is no other reason for schools to block access to Netflix than this. It is certainly a well-intended block to implement in any school, however as I already stated -- it is an extreme response to what is almost always the actions of a tiny handful of students that were watching Netflix during important class/lecture time.
How is Netflix Blocked at School?
The only other step before jumping into the solution is to understand exactly how schools implement the blocks on the online streaming service. By understanding how this is done; you can understand exactly why the solution I lay out is so effective and secure in allowing you to watch Netflix at school.
So, how do schools block Netflix? They do this almost always at the main server level, or if the school does not host its own servers then the blocks will be placed at the router/ISP level.
In either case, the main "connection" between the device you are using that is blocked from watching Netflix in school on, comes down to the IP address of said device.
You see, every device you use whether your own smartphone or a school computer is assigned a unique IP address based on the server location the device is connected to the internet through. This means that once you connect to the school's internet; your IP address is what placed all the blocks that the school has placed, including Netflix.
This is great news, because there are actually a few effective ways to literally change your IP address on whatever device(s) you're wanting to watch Netflix in school from, that are super inexpensive and take less than 2 minutes to setup.
After researching these solutions, I determined quickly that the most secure and appropriate method for this guide is to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network). So I checked out the best-rated VPNs around just now and decided to go with ExpressVPN. Why? Because lately Netflix have really clamped down on users accessing the service through a VPN; blocking them -- but ExpressVPN is still 100% effective in accessing Netflix.
How to Use a VPN to Watch Netflix at School
Step 1: Sign up for VPN
To walk you through the quick setup steps, I'll use ExpressVPN as the example VPN. So step 1 is to go to the ExpressVPN website and choose the plan that best suits your commitment and price preference.
Once you've done this, you will be prompted to setup your account and confirm setup via email. This whole process is super quick and straightforward. Here's a quick snapshot run through of how this looks:
With your account setup, you will then want to go ahead and download the VPN software onto the device you want to watch Netflix in school from.
Step 2: Download & Install VPN
Downloading the VPN software is also simple. No "technical expertise" is required to setup this VPN (or 99% of the other top-rated VPN providers around).
You will be guided to the download area on the ExpressVPN website, on which you will see that basically every device you would want to watch Netflix in school on can use the software.
So for me, for example, I use a Macbook and Android smartphone. Thus, I downloaded the OS X software then went to the Google Play Store on my Android device and got the dedicated ExpressVPN app on there.
Once you have downloaded the VPN software onto your device(s), installation will pop up automatically. Simply walk through these few steps and the software will be ready to open.
Step 3: Connect to Server on VPN
Go ahead and open the software then select any server location you prefer, and connect.
This is the all important part in the solution process that will change your IP address -- and because ExpressVPN is the only VPN I have found that still gives access to Netflix through its connection; I highly recommend connecting through a US-based server. Why? Because this will change your IP address to make your location "appear" within the US, so then when you go to Netflix after connecting to your VPN, you will have access to the full US version of the service, which is by far the best version!
Here's an example of the connection process on my Macbook:
Step 4: Watch Netflix at School
Once you are connected to the VPN on the server of your choice, you will have securely and privately changed your IP address to reflect the location you chose -- this will have lifted the block your school had placed on Netflix.
So go ahead and navigate to Netflix on your VPN-connected device, and you will have full access to the entire service in school for as long as you want. Enjoy!
There you have it. My super quick guide on how to watch Netflix at school is done. Didn't take long at all, right?
The best thing about using a VPN for this is that when you connect to the software, you are also placing a highly sophisticated privacy-blanket over all of your online activity. This means that every single thing you do online once connected will be practically impossible to trace back to your identity or physical location.
If you want to check out some more VPNs for this solution, I recommend the following three:
As you will also see, each of these VPN providers allow a free-trial period, which means you can try them out and if they don't work the way you want, then you get your money back no problem.
