How to watch NRK outside Norway in more detail:
I had long known about the stereotypical look of Scandinavian girls with long blonde hair and golden skin, but it was only when I met Birgitte in the flesh that I realized just how beautiful they were. She wasn’t as tall as I expected, but had piercing blue eyes and a quirky appearance that just melted me away from the first second I saw her.
It took a couple of beers to pluck up the courage to talk to her, but it turned out her English was great and we had a few things in common. She worked in IT as well, and lived just a few blocks away from me in Greenwich Village.
It turned out she was from Norway and had only moved to NYC a few weeks beforehand. We bonded and became friends before we started dating. Now we are living together and things are going great. She loves NYC but does miss home sometimes. To help her settle, I figured out a way she could watch NRK, her favorite Norwegian TV channel, which actually has some pretty awesome stuff on it like the thriller Mammon, which even I like.
Doing this was pretty easy using a good VPN, as you will see if you read on.
Why is NRK not Available in outside Norway?
You might wonder why she couldn’t watch NRK in NYC? The answer, quite simply, is down to rights. NRK sell the rights of many of its programs to other broadcasters overseas, and buys some programs in. Being a Norwegian station, it only has the rights to run these shows in Norway. Therefore, even though it streams content on its website, this is only available to viewers in Norway, which is a pain to Norwegians like Birgitte who live abroad and want to watch.
How is NRK Blocking Access outside Norway?
NRK stops users like Birgitte from watching their shows with something called geo-blocking. This is a pretty simple piece of software which reads the IP Address of everyone who visits their site and tries to stream content. An IP Address, if you don’t know, is a data set every internet users transmits to the sites they visit. It includes details of where you are logging on from, so if you are not in Norway, NRK knows and can stop you streaming content.
To get around this, your best bet is using a VPN. A VPN sends you internet connection through an external server located overseas. The IP Address of this server is then sent to the site rather than you won, and so if the server is in Norway, NRK thinks you are and you can stream.
It’s pretty easy to set a VPN up to do this, and if you read on below, I will walk you through the process, one step at a time.
How to Use a VPN to Watch NRK outside Norway
Step 1: Sign up for VPN
So first on all you have to sign up for a VPN, such as ExpressVPN. You can do this easily by clicking on one of the links on this page.
Once there, you can choose from one of their packages depending on your requirements, and clicking on this will take through to their payments page. Don’t worry about the cost as if you are not totally
Once you have paid, you will receive an email which requires you to click on a link in an email to activate your account.
Step 2: Download & Install VPN
With payment finished, the next step is to download and install the software. All you need to do is choose the correct operating system from the menu you can see below, and then follow the simple instruction to download and install it.
This should take you no more than a few minutes to complete.
Step 3: Connect to Norway-based Server on VPN
Once that is done, all that is left is to connect to a Norwegian server. You can do this by making a choice from ExpressVPNs lengthy list of servers.
Any Norwegian one will do, and it shouldn’t take more than a few moments to establish a connection. Below is how the connection process looks on my Android smartphone -- although you won't want to connect to a UK-based server like I do in this example:
Once you are connected, head over to the NRK website and you should be able to watch content as normal. If that seems to good to be true, then relax, because it really is a simple as that, and with just a small cost and a few moments of your time you will have access to the wide range of programing offered by NRK, regardless of where in the world you are.
Birgitte was delighted by the solution, which has worked perfectly for us, and it can work for you too.
Any questions or comments you may have can be left in the box below. I try to read to and respond to them all.
And if you are not convinced by ExpressVPN, (and trust me if you want to know how to watch NRK outside Norway, it is the best solution) then other VPNs are available and below you will see my pick of the Top 5.
