How to Watch Showcase outside Canada
Updated: March 3, 2016
Anyone who has ever lived in, or even visited Canada is likely to know all about Showcase, the Canadian TV channel with a broad range of top quality drama and science fiction programming.
It offers a great mix of new and older programming, and also a fine selection of new and original programming. I spent a year working in Montreal back in 2013, and found myself watching more and more of Showcase as my time there wore on. In particular, there were two shows made by Showcase which drew me in.
They were Lost Girl, and Continuum. Both shows were science fiction shows, but built around very different concepts, and although I am not a sci-fi geek in the way that some people can be, I do find that a well thought-through science fiction program can be hugely entertaining.
So it proved with these two series, and when I moved back to the USA, I was keen to stay tuned into Showcase for these show in particular, but also plenty of others. To my disappointment, I initially found the service blocked, but I soon happened across a VPN which has allowed me to stay watching Showcase both in the USA, and elsewhere in the world.
Keep reading and I will tell you exactly how it is done.
Why is Showcase not Available outside Canada?
Quite simply the answer to this question is one of broadcasting rights. Showcase is a Canadian TV channel and therefore only holds the rights to broadcast its shows (even those it makes itself) in Canada. The rights to show them in the USA, and elsewhere are held by a myriad of other broadcasters.
Because of these rights deals, Showcase are unable to allow online users outside Canada to tune into their shows. Doing so would break their rights agreements. So, like many broadcasters, they use something known as geo-blocking to stop online users outside Canada from watching.
How is Showcase Blocking Access outside Canada?
Geo-blocking is a technology which can read the IP Address of every user who visits a site. An IP Address includes details of where in the world you are located, and if this tells the site that you are not in Canada, then Showcase will automatically bar you from streaming any of their content online.
To get around this problem, the easiest solution is to use a VPN. A VPN works by allowing you to connect to the internet via an external server. Choosing one located in Canada will send a Canadian IP Address to the Showcase website and this means you will be able to view online streamed content, regardless of where in the world you actually are.
It’s very easy to do, and if you read on, I will explain how it is done.
