How to watch Six Nations in USA in more detail:

It’s that time of year when the Northern Hemisphere’s most competitive and passionate rugby competition kicks off again. The Six Nations may be a relatively closed shop in term of the nations who compete, with England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy contesting the event each year, but it draws a far wider audience than the home fans of the competing nations.

In the USA, Rugby holds an interesting status as European sport trying to make an impact in a sports market that’s almost as closed as the Six Nations itself. It is certainly not a growing sport in the way the soccer is in the USA. There is a USA Rugby team and they did qualify for last year’s Rugby World Cup. But they lost all four of their games and finished bottom of their group.

As a sport closely linked to the British Commonwealth, perhaps America’s desire to forget it British heritage is behind the lack of interest. Perhaps it is simply too close as a sport to American Football. But it is not hugely popular here. Having said that, there is a sizeable minority of people who follow the sport and have an interest in the Six Nations.

The Irish population is one such group, and with more than 30 million American’s identifying themselves as Irish-American, that’s a sizeable start. There are lots of British, Italian, and French ex-pats too so there is a real demand for Six Nations Rugby in the USA. But where to watch it? Well there are a few options open to you.

Where to watch the Six Nations in the USA?

The first and most obvious place to start is beIN Sports. They are now a global force in sports broadcasting and are rapidly becoming a major presence on the US sports scene too. They broadcast every Six Nations game live and exclusive in the USA, and their beIN Sport Connect service enables you to watch these matches on almost any device you like.

beIN Sports hold the Six Nations rights for the USA, so they are the only official English language broadcast option available to you. If you find yourself travelling outside the USA, their Connect service will not be available to you, but this doesn’t mean it’s not worth signing up. You can easily use a VPN such as ExpressVPN to access beIN Sports wherever you are in the world, as our detailed guide explains. At $19.99 a month to subscribe, beIN Sports offers decent value for money, but of course there are other options available. You also have a few really great VPNs in addition to ExpressVPN, which I have personally tried out and definitely recommend checking out:

If you come from a more Francophile background, and you will be cheering on the French Rugby Team in the six nations, then there is another option available to you, as French language channel TV5 Monde offers French language coverage of every Six Nations game as well. Their coverage is however only available on your TV, rather than online.

Do I have any other options?

If you are not a fan of beIN Sports, or are keen to watch coverage of your home nation from your home TV service, there are plenty of other options available for you.

If you are following the English, Welsh, or Scottish teams, then British coverage is split this year between the BBC and ITV. The good news is that both of these channels offer a free online streaming service meaning that you can watch live coverage of all the games on either the BBC iPlayer or the ITV Player.

Of course both of these services will be geo-blocked if you are trying to log-in from the USA, as the BBC and ITV only have right to broadcast six nations games in the UK. This just means you will need to turn to a VPN to help you out there, as when you log in via a VPN such as ExpressVPN, you can connect via a British server and essentially fool both services into thinking you are in the UK, even if you are not. For full details you can read our full guide on how to watch ITV outside the UK here, while the guide for watching the BBC iPlayer in the USA is here. We also have a guide to the top VPNs for the BBC iPlayer here.

As there is no subscription charge to these streaming services, it is actually a very affordable way to follow the Six Nations matches live in the USA, or indeed anywhere else in the world, as even when the small fee charge by most VPNs is taken into account, it still works out substantially cheaper than subscribing to channels such as beIN Sports.

There are other options available too of course, ESPN broadcast Six Nations Rugby in the Caribbean and Oceana regions, including Australia and New Zealand -- and if you're curious to get a VPN setup with ESPN, then check out these guides. But for most American aficionado’s either beIN Sport or the British channels will be the place to go to enjoy top quality coverage of the Six Nations Rugby Championships.

So there go. If you are looking to figure out how to watch the Six Nations in USA online in 2016, then you definitely have plenty options to choose from.

I personally highly recommend using a VPN and sticking with any online subscription to a channel you already have if possible, however it's definitely worth doing some quick math and seeing if you can't save some extra cash by switching the online service you have been using up until now.

Ultimately, it's fantastic that we have so much choice! I for one am super grateful to have the ability to never miss a Six Nations match no matter where I am in the world. We sure are a lucky bunch!

If you have any questions at all with this quick guide, then go ahead and let me know in the comments section below and I'll do my best to help you out where possible. Thanks!
