How to watch Sky Sports in Australia in more detail:
Australia is a great sporting nation and I was excited to get the opportunity to visit for a year on a working holiday after finishing University. It’s a country that has consistently punched above its weight when it comes to performing on the international stage. However as far as sports broadcasting is concerned, I felt it left quite a lot to be desired.
OK, I know I was a bit spoiled. As a kid growing up, I had a full Sky Sports subscription, which meant I became accustomed to being basically able to watch whatever sport I wanted, whenever I wanted. Sky Sports has consistently pushed back the boundaries of sports broadcasting too, and their innovative approaches were something I had always enjoyed.
Down under however, I found the coverage very traditional in its style. And sorry guys, but Aussie Rules and Cricket are just not sports for me. It didn’t take long before I was pining for my Sky Sports feed. Then I met a British guy in a Melbourne hostel who was watching Sky Sports on his laptop. I picked his brains and found out that actually, its easy to watch Sky Sports in Australia. All you need is a VPN.
Why is Sky Sports not Available in Australia?
So first lets quickly explain why I couldn’t just watch my existing Sky Sports subscription on my laptop down under. The quick answer to this is rights.
Sports make a huge amount of money by selling the rights to show their products to TV channels. There has been much hype about the latest round of TV rights for the Premier League which Sky Sports and BT Sport are thought to have paid a combined £5.14bn for. Big, big money, so it is little wonder that sports are so protective of these rights given how much is at stake.
That deal was just to show Premier League football in the UK though. They will make more money selling the rights to show it in other countries around the world. But to do this, they have to ensure that Sky Sports, and others, are not going to be broadcasting their coverage there. This mean Sky have to block users from accessing their online streaming of all their sports coverage, and they do this using something called geo-blocking.
How is Sky Sports Blocking Access in Australia?
Geo-blocking works by reading your IP Address, which is a set of data you transmit automatically when you visit a website. This data includes details of where in the world you are, so if the Sky Sports website believes you are not in the UK, it is pretty straightforward for them to block your access to their streamed content.
The only way to get around this is to change your IP Address, and the best way to do this is with a VPN. A VPN works by rerouting your internet traffic via an external server. It is this server which sends the IP Address to the website, so if the server is located in the UK, you can watch Sky Sports, regardless of where in the world you are.
It is a quick, easy, and above all, legal way to get round sites like Sky Sports which use geo-blocking. If you are already in Australia you may well be aware that a number of sites, most prominently Netflix, are targeting VPN’s and trying to stop them from using this tactic by blocking the VPN IP Addresses.
This is an approach which can only work for short periods though as it is very easy for a VPN to change its IP Addresses, and very hard for sites to identify and block new IP Addresses. So despite the media coverage, VPN’s continue to be the best way to watch geo-blocked content in Australia.
And if you read on I will explain how you can do this.
How to Use a VPN to Watch Sky Sports in Australia
Step 1: Sign up for VPN
First and foremost, you will need to sign up for a VPN. The VPN I am using is ExpressVPN which is my pick of the best providers for watching streamed content online.
So you will first need to visit the ExpressVPN website, which you can do by clicking any of the links on this page. On the site you will see a variety of subscription offers. Pick the one which best suits your needs and you will then be diverted to their payment page.
Making a payment to ExpressVPN is an easy process and you just have to follow the simple onscreen instructions. They also offer a 30-day money-back guarantee if you are not completely satisfied.
Once you have paid, you will then need to confirm your account by clicking on the link in an email.
Step 2: Download & Install VPN
Once you have done that you will be presented with the menu below which invites you to download and install the ExpressVPN software. Just click on the right operating system for your device and follow the simple download instructions.
This process shouldn’t take more than a few moments.
Step 3: Connect to UK-based Server on VPN
Once the software has installed, open it up and the only thing left to do is to choose which of their servers you want to connect to. Obviously if you want to watch Sky Sports in Australia, you will need to choose one of the UK-based ones.
Click on the link and wait a few moments for a connection to be established.
Step 4: Setup a Sky Sports Account
And there you have it. If you already have a Sky Sports account, just log in as usual and you can start watching.
If you don’t have an account, it is really easy to sign up for one on the website by following the onscreen instructions. As of the last time I checked, there were no international restrictions on doing this.
Once you have an account, you are all set to enjoy everything Sky Sports offers.
This is the process pretty much exactly as it was explained to me in the hostel in Melbourne. It worked for me and has also worked for countless other Brits living and travelling down under.
Do let me know about your experiences using the comments box below, and if there are any changes to this process, do not hesitate to flag them up to me.
I have used Express VPN to watch Sky Sports in Australia, but if you prefer there are plenty of other VPNs on the market. See below my pick of the Top 5.
