How to Change IP Address
↓ Full explanation and setup guide ↓
"How to change your IP address", has become a very common query in recent years as a result of the increasing amount of people that use online streaming services that offer different versions of their service depending on each user's physical location.
Some such services are simply not available if you are physically located in a particular part of the world.
The second most common reason an increasing number of online users nowadays want to know how to change my public IP address on their devices is to increase the level of privacy protection they have on their online activity.
So how are these common issues related to changing your IP address?
Well, your IP address is a numerical string (e.g. 123.456.78) that gives all online websites/services (and anyone that wants to check) your personal physical location at any time you are connected to the world wide web.
You see the moment you connect to the internet, whether at home, in your local cafe or at work/school -- you are instantly assigned an IP address that represents your individual device connected to that ISP (Internet Service Provider). This IP address is openly shown to online services/websites (and again -- to anyone that wants to look for it) and they can use this information to grant or deny you access as they want.
So for the two increasingly significant reasons -- we can call these protecting your "online freedom" and your "online privacy" -- it is definitely worth your while to take 5 minutes and learn about the most effective and secure way to change your IP address.
Thus, I decided to put together this quick little guide on how you can do exactly this. Enjoy!
When and Why to Change IP Address
Let's take a quick look at each of the two major instances you would want to change your IP address quickly, to give a fuller understanding of why the solution I walkthrough below is so worthwhile quickly setting up.
Protect Your Online Freedom
If you are like 99% of the online world today, then you will regularly use at least one popular on-demand online media streaming service like Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Spotify, etc.
Using any of these regularly, you will have learned at some point that 99% of these services have what are known as "geo-blocks" placed on them, which essentially allow/deny you access to either specific media or the entire service altogether, based on your physical location at any one time.
These geo-blocks are implemented across the vast majority of online streaming services because of licensing rights that must be adhered to by each service respectively. Meaning that each service has legally agreed to offer each individual piece of media on their service to specific regions in the world -- and therefore have to make ever effort to ensure that these licensing agreements are not breached by any user. Hence, geo-blocks.
So as explained earlier in this guide, it is your IP address that 99% of these service use to determine your physical location and thus deny/grant access to you based on this.
Protect Your Online Privacy
In tandem with protecting your online freedom and utilising knowing how to change your IP address to do so; protecting your online privacy the same way is increasingly becoming a very necessary thing to do.
Today's online climate, globally, is only becoming more and more "surveillance" heavy. More and more national governments are passing bills and laws that increasingly threaten the privacy of the individual online user.
In addition to this, there is the surging increase in independent and highly sophisticated "hackers" that have nothing but malicious intent to acquire as much of your online behaviour and sensitive personal data as they can.
From your online behaviour being monitored, to be tracked, to even being recorded across all your devices, taking as much control over protecting your online privacy is -- in my opinion and that of many privacy experts -- of vital importance.
One of the most common and openly accessible ways for any third party individual to both monitor and acquire your physical location and personal online data at any time, from anywhere in the world, is through your IP address.
Taking control of the ability to change your IP address at any moment is therefore an essential 'online life' skill to have. Thankfully, there are multiple ways in which you can setup this ability in less than 2 minutes on any device you go online from -- with one method that stands tall above all other IP address-changing approaches: using a Virtual Private Network (or VPN) on your device.
The reason this method is by far the most beneficial way to change your IP address is because it is the only solution that provides a highly sophisticated level of encryption on every single part of your online behaviour and data the second you connect to it. This means your privacy is protected to an incredibly high level.
How to Use a VPN to Change IP Address
There are over 100+ VPN service providers available right now that offer varying levels of speed performance (i.e. how fast your internet connection remains after you connect to the VPN) and encryption (i.e. how protected your privacy is).
So for this reason, I personally reviewed the very best-rated VPN providers on the market right now and narrowed down my selection to ExpressVPN. This provider consistently covers all the essentials a VPN should at a very affordable price, so I will use it as the example VPN while I walk you through the quick setup steps now.
NOTE: I list the top 5 VPN providers outside of ExpressVPN at the bottom of this guide. Click here to skip to these now if you want.
Step 1: Sign up for VPN
Start by going to the ExpressVPN website and choosing the plan that best fits your commitment and budget preference. You'll see that you are given a free-trial period, so you have a good chunk of time to try it out before deciding if it's the VPN provider for you.
After choosing your plan you will be asked for only your email address, and then you will be prompted to confirm your account setup. This all takes less than 60 seconds. Here's a glance at how this process looks:
Once you have confirmed your account setup, you will next want to download and install the VPN software onto the device(s) you want to change the IP address of and protect the privacy of. You can do this on as many devices as you want.
Step 2: Download & Install VPN
So for example, I use a Macbook and an iPhone. This meant I downloaded the OS X software of ExpressVPN, then navigated to the App Store on my iPhone and downloaded the dedicated ExpressVPN iPhone app thereon (for free, of course).
Basically every device you would every want to protect the privacy of and/or change IP address on is compatible with the ExpressVPN software (as with 99% of VPN providers out there):
With the software downloaded, it will ask to install automatically. Go through the installation process as required (takes just a few seconds) and then you will be ready to move onto the next step.
Step 3: Connect to Any Server on VPN
Open up the VPN software and you will see how straight forward the software is to actually use.
You literally just choose a server location to connect to, then hit "Connect". This is the step that will change your IP address accordingly. So for example, if you are located in the UK and you choose to connect to a US-based server location on the VPN then your IP address will change to show your location as "within the US" as soon as you are connected.
Here's a quick look at the connection process that I snapped from my Windows:
Step 4: Enjoy the Benefits of Controlling Your IP Address
Once you are connected to the VPN, you will have immediately given yourself the highly sophisticated "military-grade" level encryption on all of your online behaviour from that point until you choose to disconnect. That's your privacy protected, making it practically impossible for any third party (including your country's government) to trace your online activity back to your personal identity or physical location.
And of course you will now have access to any online service or website content that was previously only accessible to users that are physically located in a specific country -- based on whichever server location you decided to connect to the VPN through.
For example, connecting to a US-based server while you're in the UK will mean that when you now go to use Netflix, you will be presented with the vastly superior US version of Netflix and all the awesome TV show and movies that you were not offered on the UK version of the service just seconds ago.
How To Get a US IP Address
There's many reasons why you'd want to change your current IP address to a US IP address. Unblocking content that's geoblocked for US only user is probably the most common.
Internet users with US IP addresses can also access more websites and online services than almost any other IP address on the planet. Even Netflix offers 5,000+ titles to US users while the rest of the world only has access to around 600 titles.
How To Get a United Kingdom - UK IP Address
If you're one of the millions of UK expatriates looking to change your IP to a UK IP address while you're abroad, take comfort in the fact that you're not alone.
Acquiring a UK IP address for all of your devices is made very simple by ExpressVPN's location switcher. Simply go to ExpressVPN.com, signup for an account, download the software, and change your IP address to a UK IP address quickly.
How To Get A Canadian / Canada IP Address
Oh Canada! Why must you block all of us outside your beautiful country from accessing your online content?
Yes, ExpressVPN.com also offers servers within Canada in both Toronto and Vancouver as well as several other locations through the country. Signup for an account, download the software, and change your IP address to a Canadian IP address quickly.
How To Get a Spain / Spanish IP Address
Spain has many online services that are blocked from outside the country. Spanish IP addresses have a lot of great uses and it's not relatively difficult to change your IP address to one from Spain.
ExpressVPN.com has many IP addresses from Spain and changing your IP address to one can be done using the location picker tool (see screenshot to the right).
How To Get a German / Germany IP Address
There's nothing more frustrating than trying to access a German website only to find it completely blocked.
ExpressVPN.com offers German IP addresses in Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin and other locations. German content is worth unblocking and having an IP address from Germany is invaluable.
NOTE: Yes, as of today (August 7th, 2017) ExpressVPN 100% works with Netflix
There you have it. A super quick and simple guide on the most effective and secure way I found on how to change my IP address on any device I want, by using a VPN.
As mentioned, I personally reviewed a huge amount of VPN service providers to determine the best quality providers at the fairest price. ExpressVPN came out on top, however the following 5 VPN providers are also definitely worth checking out:
